Love and EDM: A unique Truss wedding with two DJs

Ashley and Brian’s Truss wedding was a testament to the power of music and the importance of personalization in creating memorable events. And on this night, it wasn’t just love that took center stage; it was also the couple's passion for electronic dance music (EDM).
From rooftop ceremony sound to a reception with two very different DJ sets, this night was a seamless musical journey and celebration of love.
The couple met at The Ohio State University, and share a love for music festivals. Having attended dozens of festivals together, it was essential that their wedding reflect this passion for music.
Having been brought on board by our frequent collaborator, the always-exceptional Maria Kovacevich of Elegant Events by Maria, we worked with Ashley and Brian to set up a curated sound experience for the whole night. From the rooftop ceremony to the reception with no less than two DJ rigs, our focus was on creating a seamless musical journey throughout.
Rooftop ceremony vs. pool party
The ceremony took place on the rooftop at Truss. While easy to tackle, it’s important to know that in this environment, you may encounter distractions such as road noise from the streets below or, in this case, a rooftop pool party on the adjacent building!
To ensure crystal-clear sound, SSE provided full audio reinforcement. This included the use of wireless lapel mics for the officiant and the groom, with a directional mic featuring a cardioid pattern to capture the bride's vows without the need for additional mics – aka she didn’t need to stick an ugly lapel mic on her beautiful dress.
As Jay R Rich, our VP and Lead DJ on the event, noted, "The sound was crystal clear and perfect, which was essential given the environment."
Overcoming nature for cocktails
No event is without its challenges, and this wedding was no exception.
The presence of a swarm of mayflies riiight before cocktail hour meant a quick change of plans was necessary! Because of the bugs, cocktail hour had to be moved from the outdoor rooftop area to the indoor space.
Despite this switch, the transition was so smooth (go vendors, go!), and the string ensemble, City Six Strings, was able to provide their beautiful music without the need for additional mics.
All-out dance party
With dinner and speeches concluded, Jay R. kicked off the reception celebration with high-energy music, playing an impressive 61 songs in just an hour and a half.
While the couple chose to focus their budget on music and florals, SSE provided dance floor lighting to enhance the atmosphere. Although there was no elaborate lighting setup, the presence of glow sticks and dance floor giveaways added an element of fun and energy to the party.
"The last half an hour was like a grand finale at a fireworks show," Jay R recalled.
As the clock struck 10 pm, the EDM DJ took over, transforming Truss into a pulsating club. The energy was electric, with the bride and groom expressing that it was an unforgettable night.

Jay R emphasized the significance of reading the room and adapting to the crowd's energy, which contributed to the packed dance floor throughout the night.
"It's talent, experience, and when you meet with your DJ a month before the wedding, you get way more confidence," Jay R shared.
A magical vendor team
The success of the event was also due to the collaboration with other vendors.
Maria Kovacevic, the planner, played a crucial role in coordinating the details, while the photographer, Jonathan Coslin, and videographer, Jared Staley, captured the magic of the night.
